Direction-based Wireless LAN Positioning

Wireless LAN (WLAN) positioning has received much attention due to its advantages with respect to indoor positioning. “Location fingerprinting” has been widely accepted as an effective method of implementing signal strength based positioning. In WLAN positioning, the mobile user’s (MU) orientation has a significant impact on the received signal strength from an Access Point, and has been addressed when the fingerprint database is generated. In this paper, directional information is used not only to increase the positioning accuracy, but also to estimate the MU’s orientation. A direction-based positioning fingerprinting technique is proposed. Several experiments were carried out to test the proposed approach. The results show the direction-based approach can both successfully localise the MU and estimate the MU’s direction in both indoor and outdoor environments.
